By the twentieth century, jazz (and subsequent African-based musical forms including soul, funk, and Cuban rumba) travelled back across the Atlantic, first through recordings and later by artists on tour. There, African musicians immediately recognized the source roots, adapted some, altered others, and in the process, created entirely new musical forms.

In Ethiopia, one of the first major musicians to lay the groundwork for Ethio-jazz was Nerses Nalbandian. His family escaped the Armenian genocide in Turkey, and settled in Ethiopia, where Nalbandi would become a band leader for many burgeoning Ethio-jazz musicians in the 1950s.

Largely credited as being the greatest innovator of Ethio-jazz and exposing it to the world, Mulatu Astatke was born in 1943 in Jimma, Ethiopia. He travelled to Wales in the late 1950s to study engineering and to the chagrin of his parents, Astatke began to take an interest in music, first studying Western classical music before heading to Boston's Berklee College of Music to formally study jazz. It was there where Astatke took the fusion of traditional Ethiopian folk music and American jazz to a new level. Astatke explained its roots to the BBC, 'There are tribes in the south called the Derashe. They are surrounded by people who play five tone music but they have created a diminished 12-tone scale. Diminished scales are very important in jazz music especially for improvising. We learn how Charlie Parker came up with diminished scales as well as Claude Debussy and Bach. But always on my mind is the question of who were first with the scale, these people or the Derashe tribe?'

By the late 1960s, Astatke decided to return to Ethiopia in order to cultivate Ethio-jazz in his homeland. At first, his vibraphone-based folk-jazz was considered quite unorthodox. However, within years, it transformed the capital, which came to be known as 'Swinging Addis'. The late 1960s and early 1970s were known as the 'golden age' in Addis Ababa, as countless jazz orchestras and ensembles thrived in the city, led by the innovations of Mulatu Astatke and saxophonist extraordinaire, Getatchew Mekuria. Addis Ababa was in full swing in 1973 when American jazz legend Duke Ellington came to town and performed together with Mulatu Astatke.

Much of the Ethiopian jazz scene came crashing down the following year, in 1974, when a Soviet-backed military junta known as the Derg overthrew the government. The consequences of the coup and subsequent 'Red Terror' were profound. It left tens of thousands dead and military curfews virtually destroyed the thriving musical club scene.

When the Soviet Union broke apart in 1991, the Derg lost its backing and was subsequently overthrown. That decade saw a rebirth in Ethiopia. The budding democracy quickly became a thriving home of musical creativity. Ethiopian Jazz hit new global audiences through CD releases that included the Ethiopiques series and several Rough Guide albums. Astatke's captivating soundtrack to Jim Jarmusch's film Broken Flowers in 2005 brought Ethio Jazz to even wider audiences. For those able to look beyond the crossfire, the country's music is a treasure house. This is the first collection to bring the popular, classical and folk traditions of Afghanistan together on one disc. Some of the featured musicians are living inside the country others are abroad. The result of twenty-five years of war, is that much of the musical life happens in exile - although the artists maintain a huge following at home. Since the overthrow of the Taliban in 2001, many of the biggest stars have returned to give concerts, while others have returned to live.

Broadly speaking, Afghanistan is where three cultural worlds collide. It is where the Persian Empire meets those of India and Central Asia. Yet Afghan music, while absorbing elements from all three, has an identity all its own.

Of course, it is the Taliban who have the most notorious reputation when it comes to music. Their radical interpretation of Islamic law meant that music was totally banned in the parts of the country they controlled between 1996 and 2001. It was the most severe ban on music there has ever been - musicians hid their instruments, many had them destroyed and a large number left the country. The Taliban closed down Afghan TV, and Radio Afghanistan, which had been responsible for the creation of Afghan popular music since it began broadcasting in the 1940s, was renamed Radio Sharia and broadcast a strictly limited diet of chants (tarana) and unaccompanied songs in praise of the Taliban. In Dari and Pashtu, the main languages of Afghanistan, the word 'music' actually refers to musical instruments, which is why a ban on music didn't include unaccompanied songs and why one of the main singers at Radio Sharia found himself in charge of 'songs without music'.

Music has been caught in the crossfire in over thirty years of conflict in Afghanistan. In 1978, a coup overthrew President Daud and a communist government came to power, which was propped up by the Soviet invasion of 1979. Musicians fared quite well during this period as long as they towed the line. The mujahideen fought a jihad against the 'ungodly', communist occupation, and the Soviet army withdrew in 1990. The mujihideen took over in 1992, but there was fighting between different factions and virtual civil war. Kharabat, the musicians' quarter of Kabul, was pretty much destroyed in the shelling. Restrictions on music were also imposed with the banning of female singers and a clamp-down on radio and TV. It was in 1996 that the Taliban reached Kabul and imposed their fundamentalist ban. Since their fall in 2001, the restrictions on music have gradually eased.

There isn't anything in the Qu'ran which explicitly forbids music the problems some Islamic clerics have with it come from the hadith (the sayings and actions of the Prophet according to his companions) and these are open to differing interpretations. The majority of Islamic countries have very lively music scenes - Egypt, Turkey, Morocco, for instance - but it's the hard-line regimes of countries like Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan under the Taliban that crack down on it. And, religion aside, Afghanistan is a very conservative country when it comes to social customs, education and women's rights. Still today, there are many who object to women singers and dancing, which is seen as something disreputable and unseemly. In Havana Marking's feature documentary Afghan Star, one of the female contestants, Setara Hussainzada, causes consternation even amongst her twenty-something contemporaries because she moves slightly on stage.

Just as Radio Afghanistan revolutionized the popular music scene in the late 1940s and 1950s, commercial radio and television have transformed the music scene since they arrived in the mid-2000s. Radio Arman and Tolo TV have made popular music an important part of their programming and, as the documentary shows, the Afghan Star show (a sort of American Idol contest) has had an incredible impact on the music scene in Afghanistan (with an estimated eleven million viewers, one third of the population). Former contestants like Shakeb Hamdard (winner of the first Afghan Star competition), Rafi Naabzada (winner of the third competition) and Setara Hussainzada (involved in the third competition) have become well-known.

Inevitably, the rise in popular music has been at the expense of traditional styles, although these are still heard on (the much less popular) state-run radio. The national instrument of Afghanistan is the rubab, which probably originates in the Pashtun areas of the country, in the southeast. It is a chunky plucked lute with a mulberry-wood body covered by skin and three main playing strings. Many of the instruments are beautifully decorated with mother-of-pearl. It has a strong, woody, muscular sound, at its best in the folk repertoire, either solo or as part of an ensemble. Many players have also used it, with tabla accompaniment, to play classical raga music in the Indian style. The rubab was transformed in India into the sarod, one of the most important string instruments in Indian classical music. The most celebrated rubab player was Mohammad Omar (1905-1980), who also directed the National Orchestra Of Afghan Radio for many years. There are three rubab players of three different generations featured in this compilation: Ghulam Hussain, the best player currently living in Kabul, who learned from Mohammad Omar Ustad Rahim Khushnawaz, a veteran player living in Herat, in the west of the country and Homayun Sakhi, born in Kabul, but now living in California. Alongside the rubab, there are other plucked string instruments, such as the dutar, a long-necked lute probably of Central Asian origin and the dambura, a shorter lute played by the Hazara people in central Afghanistan.

Although for the Taliban music and religion were incompatible, Afghanistan is one of the centres of Sufism where music is used in praise of God. Several of the most celebrated Sufi saints came from what is now Afghanistan - Rumi foremost amongst them, who was born in 1207 in the city of Balkh. The female singer Mahwash draws on Sufi poetry in much of her repertoire: 'Unlike the Mullahs,' she says, 'I think music is a form of worship. You can worship God with prayer, but you can also use poetry and music.' He would simply write new verses in Khmer for songs like, 'House of The Rising Sun', 'Black Magic Woman' and The Archies' 'Sugar Sugar'. An apocryphal story is told in Cambodia about his death at the hands of the Khmer Rouge before he was to be executed Sisamouth asked to sing a song for the Khmer Rouge cadres the soldiers, though, were unmoved and after he finished singing, shot him on the spot.

Female singer Pan Ron became well known after recording duets with Sinn Sisamouth from the mid 1960s onwards and like Sisamouth was a prodigious songwriter and recording artist with over five hundred songs to her name. Many rumours surround her fate during the Killing Field years. One story relates that she was forced by Pol Pot to marry one of his assistants in 1977 and forced to exclusively perform songs for the new regime until she was told that she and her family would be moved to another village. Sereysothea was last seen departing by ox cart and disappeared under typically mysterious circumstances. Another account recounts that she died from being overworked in a Khmer Rouge agricultural camp. Traversing the diverse European sounds of Greece, Italy, France and Spain, the compelling North African music of Morocco, Algeria and Egypt, this album presents some of the Mediterranean's most exhilarating coastal sounds.

'A very satisfying musical meze.' HMV Choice Magazine

The Rough Guide To The Music Of Paris is a superb overview of Paris's eclectic contemporary music scene. At the time, café-charbons of the Bastille area were owned by people from the Auvergne, a mountainous region in central France. There, in courtyards, people danced the emblematic bourrée to the sound of the cabrette (also called musette), the Auvergnat small-pipe. The Gare de Lyon train station, leading to Italy, was not far away, and many migrants from the other side of the Alps settled in the area, bringing with them their accordions. They started playing alongside small-pipe players, eventually replacing them. A new music was born, which kept the name musette or bal musette. The rest is history: the accordion soon became the symbol of Paris!

The first musette accordionists of the 1920s and early 1930s made people dance in the shady dance halls of the Bastille area. They imposed a new repertoire: the valse musette (waltz), the java (derived from the mazurka) and the foxtrot amongst other styles. Alongside the accordion, a typical bal musette orchestra often included the banjo (sometimes played by a Gypsy musician) and the j&;acircze (drums, from the American word 'jazz'). Big names of this era include Emile Vacher (1883-1969), often credited as the real inventor of the musette style, the Péguri brothers (Charles Péguri was one of the first accordionists to play alongside a cabrette player, who happened to be his own father-in-law, Antoine Bouscatel) and Henri Momboisse (1889-1960).

In the late 1930s, some younger accordionists enjoyed American jazz so much that they created the swing musette, mixing both styles. This new music became especially popular during the German occupation (1940-1944), because the dance halls were closed and people turned to jazz concerts instead. Swing accordionists like Gus Viseur (1915-1974) or Tony Muréna (1916-1971) became household names.

After World War II, the musette style was popular all over France, and big names of the chanson scene, like Edith Piaf, were often accompanied by an accordionist. Then the instrument grew out of fashion. The musette scene did not manage to renew itself - a new generation, born in the 1940s, turned to rock music (often, they hated the accordion!). Almost all bals musette on the rue de Lappe closed.

In the late 1980s, though, there was an unexpected revival. Young rock bands like Les Gar&;ccedilons Bouchers adopted the instrument and rock musette was born! And now you can hear the accordion in jazz or contemporary music again, thanks to pioneers like Richard Galliano. The French are no longer ashamed of their national instrument &;hellip although it must be said that the golden age of the 1920s and 1930s is not well-known at all. Few people outside of specialist circles know about Emile Vacher or Tony Muréna, who were huge stars in their own time.

The first edition of The Rough Guide To Paris Café Music told the story of the Parisian accordion, mixing historical recordings from the golden age of bal musette with modern recordings featuring the instrument played in a different context (jazz, rock, chanson&;hellip). It was released in the early 2000s and gave a broad overview of this typically French sound. A decade later, this second edition allows us to discover young musicians who have risen to fame during recent years. In some instances calling the music 'psych' is a bit of a stretch - just because it's weird or dressed up in imported trappings from the same era does not make it necessarily so - and at other times it seems to be merely cashing in on a trend.

Happily this is not generally the case when applied to cumbia, because this venerable genre of Colombian music with an international reach truly did go through a psychedelic period. Especially in Peru, where it is also experiencing a genuine resurgence of interest among contemporary musicians and audiences alike, from South America to the United States, Europe and beyond. Psychedelic rock (especially the Latin-flavoured kind, as practiced by Santana, Malo, Azteca and the like) and cumbia came of age together in the mid to late 1960s under parallel circumstances. In Peru (and to a lesser extent Mexico, Venezuela and Colombia) the tools of rock and roll - namely electric guitar and organ - were already quite popular among the youth of the day and it makes perfect sense that this originally acoustic Afro-Colombian coastal social dance music would be reborn under the influence of psychedelic culture by the late 1960s, in order to make it relevant to the younger generation. Add to that the strong surf culture in places like coastal Peru and Mexico and conditions were ripe for just the sort of experimentation sampled here. In addition it can be said that 'imported' hippie culture and rock and roll were seen as a real threat to order and decency by dictatorships from Brazil to Cuba. So when many Latin American governments decided to repress the rock and roll 'rebellion' and psychedelic youth culture swirling around them, some of that vibe and energy was sublimated and folded into more marginalised and nationalistically acceptable tropical musical formats like samba, cumbia or salsa.

Peru has had its share of great electric guitarists bending strings to the rolling beats of cumbia - from Enrique Delgado to José Luis Carballo - who came from its own important domestic tradition of criollo guitar music as much as rock). So it's not an exaggeration to say cumbia peruana (and regional variants at times referred to as cumbia andina, cumbia selvática, and more recently chicha) has had the lion's share of Carlos Santana influences evident in the mix. For this reason we start the compilation with a suite of five vintage Peruvian recordings from some of the greats like Juaneco y su Combo. Interestingly the Peruvian psych sound so prevalent in the early 1970s had a profound effect on the originators of cumbia hence we offer the two fine examples from 1970s Colombia that follow. We round out the mix with a gaggle of contemporary artists from Chile, Mexico, USA, Peru, Colombia, Argentina, and Germany, bringing the psychedelic tropical vibe up to date while still retaining the trippy trappings of yesteryear.

Lose yourself with this handpicked collection of irresistible Latin grooves. Sometimes, amongst this clan of DJs and vinyl hoarders there's a desire to share some nugget of knowledge or special track. Just as often it's a counter-desire to blow someone's mind with a cover or original version, or perhaps even stump a fellow collector with some hidden gem that you've blown the dust off and brought back to its original lustre. Hopefully a jam they never even knew existed!

All the tracks in this treasure trove of trans-national Latin grooves from yesterday and today are either favorites of DJs and collectors but are otherwise unknown, have not yet been released, or have not been digitally reissued before. Unlike most Rough Guides, you may not recognize any names, but that is the point. When you dig deep, the payback is even greater.

While 'rare groove' as a genre owes its name to the London scene of the 1980s, it was used largely to describe obscure, hard to find soul, funk or jazz music from the US and was tied in with the world of dance DJs, promoted in the spirit of sourcing music for hip-hop or house music sampling. Latin jazz and to a lesser extent boogaloo was included within this purview, but not particularly salsa or other genres of Latin music. This collection throws a wider net to include not only the required old-school Latin/soul/jazz, but also mambo, salsa, cumbia, descarga and several cuts that are just plain hard to define. From the lesser-known locale of Venezuela, Nelson y Sus Estrellas, Federico y Su Combo Latino and Los Kenyas are sure to surprise and delight. Alfredo Guitiérrez y Los Caporales Del Magdalena, Piper Pimienta y Su Orquesta, and Afrosound represent Colombia, while Mario Allison, Carlos Pickling and Grupo 2000 hail from the recently re-discovered mother-load of Peru. No compilation of this sort would be complete without some sought-after tracks from the US, so we've included Joe Quijano, Orchestra Dee Jay and the Gilberto Sextet. Bringing us up to date, you'll find a healthy portion of contemporary international artists finishing off the set. Spanglish Fly, Los Po-Boy-Citos, Setenta, Rumba Caliente, Los Charly's Orchestra and Ray Lugo all share a strong appreciation for the rare groove aesthetic but are clearly from today's scene.

Includes Bonus Album by Spanglish Fly:
Let My People Boogaloo!
