Track List

Chile’s foremost traditional group, Inti-Illimani, brought their Andean Indian music to Europe in 1973 and have been intoxicating audiences ever since. Remaining in Latin America, Yolanda Rayo, a new star on the Colombian salsa scene performs the biggest hit, ‘Voy A Ganarme Tu Amor’, from her second album. Mariachi Reyes Del Aserradero hail from Jalisco, Mexico, and are distinguished by outstanding voices. Just further north in New Mexico, Sharon Burch has dedicated her life to the preservation of the traditional Navajo culture through her music.

From the mainland we venture across the water to the islands of the Caribbean, and stop off in the musical haven of Cuba. One of the legends of Cuban piano, Rubén González has achieved fame and notoriety through the impact and success of Buena Vista Social Club, and appears here with a track from his debut solo album. It’s then a short hop to the island of Trinidad, to visit 3 Canal. Their combination of calypso, Latin, funk and drum ‘n’ bass has taken Trinidad by storm. Puerto Rico is our next destination to drop in on one of the top songwriters in Latin music, Rodolfo Barrera (aka Nava). Having written hits for major Latin stars, he embarked on his own project and delivered his amazingly seductive voice on an album that is a textbook in brilliant songcraft. On the final stop of the Caribbean tour, Yabby You (Vivian Jackson & The Defenders), from Jamaica, features with one of his first hits ‘Love Thy Neighbour’.

From there we travel further afield to Asia, sampling the ‘shooting star’ of Uzbekistan, Mokhira Asadova, before moving swiftly on to India and touching base with Jolly Mukherjee who has been at the heart of the Bollywood scene in Bombay for many years. After hearing one of India’s most influential living musicians, Ali Akbar Khan, a trip to Asia would not be complete without tasting the delights of the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, here reworked by UK-based mixmaster Bally Sagoo. The land of the rising sun arrives in the form of Takashi Hirayasu and Bob Brozman with their gorgeous take of traditional Okinawan music fused with blues and Hawaiian. Soul Flower Monoke Summit follow, who are the acoustic version of Japan’s hottest rock roots band Soul Flower Union.

A track from Indonesian songstress Detty Kurnia, before heading down to Australasia and experiencing Te Vaka and Archie Roach. A long and varied voyage, the Rough Guide To World Music Volume 2 provides seventeen tracks to inspire and educate.
