“…an admirable starter pack, covering good examples from most of the big names as well as works by important secondary figures. Concise, informative liner notes provide further edification ****” – Q (UK)
The release is compiled and re-mastered by Robert Parker, the pioneering and highly respected presenter of ‘Jazz Classics In Stereo’ on BBC Radio 2 and Jazz FM. It is produced to accompany the excellent Rough Guide To Jazz book.
The track list reads like a who’s who of Classic Jazz and kicks off with Jelly-Roll Morton’s seminal ‘Dr Jazz’ and ‘Smoke House Blues’, soon followed by Original Dixieland Jazz Band’s ‘Original Dixieland One Step’, and King Oliver’s ‘Dippermouth Blues’. The early stages of Louis Armstrong’s long and influential career are then showcased by two tracks ‘Potato Head Blues’ and ‘West End Blues’ followed by two great women Jazz vocalists, Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith. Other highlights include the original Boogie Woogie of Pinetop Smith, Bix Beiderbecke’s ‘Since My Girl Turned Me Down’, Fats Waller’s classic ‘The Minor Drag’ and Fletcher Henderson’s ‘New King Porter Stomp’.
