London's Callingis a brand new project that aims to stress the diversity of the London community and music scene. The album is a compilation of famous songs on the UK capital, covered by multi-cultural bands and musicians that are based in London. Funded by The Arts Council and presented by Culture Clash, the result is a fun and innovative one.
With London hosting the international Olympic games this summer, the producers of London's Calling thought it would be a perfect moment to challenge the Anglo-centric domination on the London music scene, as over 30% of the London population has been born outside England.
One of the artists featuring on the album is Krar Collective (pictured above), an Ethiopian trio signed to World Music Network's Riverboat Records with a forthcoming debut album Ethiopia Super Krar. Their rendition of 'LDN' gives a good impression of how Lily Allen would sound Ethiopian style!
Further songs on the album include Lord Kitchener's calypso classic 'London Is The Place For Me' in a Roma tribute by Ionel's Roma, Sephardic-Morrocan band Los Desterrados (pictured below) are covering 'Chelsea' by Elvis Costello, and The Clash's 'London Calling' features twice on London's Calling in an Indo-Jazz cover by Arun Gosh and Arabic-Electro-dance rendition by Transglobal Underground ft Afrikan Boy.
