Best African Act at the MOBOS

Launched in 1996, by founder and CEO Kanya King MBE, the MOBO Awards were the first awards show in Europe to celebrate urban music. In their sixteen year history, the MOBO Awards have, undoubtedly, played an instrumental role in elevating black music and culture to mainstream popular status in the UK.

This year's awards takes place 5 October in Glasgow. The most exciting category for us at the WMN is of course the Best African Act. The nominees are listed below, who will you vote for?

Malian band SMOD who fuse rap and hip hop with folk and traditional music.


Vieux Farka Touré, guitarist and singer from Mali, son of the legendary Ali Farka Touré.


And finally, party music artist Wizkid, from Nigeria.
