Internationally acclaimed gypsy-punks Gogol Bordello prepare for the EU release of new album Pura Vida Conspiracy on 22 July. The anarchic group have reached worldwide fame since their classic 2005 release Gypsy Punks: Underdog World Strike, and also feature on our compilation, The Rough Guide To Planet Rock.
The guitar licks and driving beats of rock music have been influencing bands from across the globe for decades, mixing local sounds with rock and creating striking new guitar-fuelled styles. Featuring the Cambodian-American psychedelia of Dengue Fever, the magnificent desert blues of Tinariwen, the Gypsy Punk of Gogol Bordello and the Tuvan rock throat singing of Yat-Kha, this album rocks!
Recorded in El Paso, Texas with producer Andrew Scheps, this is the band's first new album since 2010's Trans-Continental Hustle, produced by Rick Rubin and released on his American Recordings label. This new release builds on the cross-continental musical interweave of Eastern European and Latin American styles found on their previous album - the title Pura Vida Conspiracy refers to the popular Costa Rican phrase meaning 'full of life', or 'going great'.
Eugene Hütz, the band's iconic frontman, recently told Rolling Stone magazine, 'Right now the focus is mixing Balkan music with Latin American, because those two have discovered each other and are going fucking bananas.' 'Malandrino', the first single release from the album, gives a taste of the album's mix of a pura vida good-times vibe and Gogol Bordello's trademark raucous gypsy punk.
Gogol Bordello will also be bringing their riotous and electrifying live act to the UK in December. With a reputation as one of the world's hottest live bands, these dates are set to be one of the highlights of the winter calendar.
