To celebrate the release of their debut album WMN is giving away an exclusive FREE track from this album.
Krar Collective serve up mind-blowing Ethiopian grooves on this excellent debut. Armed with their krar, kebero drums and stunning vocals, they have created Ethiopia Super Krar – an album rooted in tradition, and soaked with attitude.
Krar Collective are releasing their debut album on Riverboat Records on 10 September.
The Krar Collective is made up of three energetic performers, Temesegen Zeleke on the krar which is a six stringed harp instrument, Robel Tesfaye on traditional Ethopian kebero drums, and singer-dancer Genet Assefa. Their album Ethiopia Super Krar is fixed in tradition but has a fresh take on Ethiopian music. The tracks were recorded to a tape on a 1960s 24 track reel- to reel machine. The krar player, Zeleke, describes their sound as ‘Ethiopian traditional music with a rocky edge.’ The ancient sounds of the krar are heard through the hypnotic, melodic and bluesy music. The group as the title suggest focuses on the krarwhich is tuned to a pentatonic scale, a scale typically heard in Ethiopian and Eritrean music. It is often played by singer-poet called azmarisimilar to the West African griot.
