Punk In Africa

'Punk In Africa' is an exciting new film which traces the history and impact of punk rock on five African nations; South Africa, Mozambique, Namibia, Kenya and Zimbabwe, with particular emphasis on the surprising and often overlooked role that punk music played in the anti-Apartheid struggle in South Africa.

Meticulously researched and bursting with rare archival footage and photos, the film digs up all the top faces from the heyday of South Africa's '70s-'80s multiracial punk scene, and sets them all talking in a series of interviews that presents an oral history of the music. Members of seminal bands like National Wake, Wild Youth and Suck are interviewed alongside producers, music journalists and even family members to recall the origin story of African punk that's as exciting as the music itself.

The film was warmly received at its official international premiere at the 2011 edition of Festival do Rio (6-18 October), the largest and fastest-growing film festival in South America. The new trailer below was produced to coincide with the film's international debut and ongoing international roll out - check the 'Punk In Africa' website for more details on release dates near you!
