This Buena Vista Social Club piano prodigy and Havana Cultura star has grabbed Cuban jazz by the horns and drawn it, hot, stylish and sultry, into the 21st century. Roberto Fonseca looks back to his Caribbean roots while striking forwards with a sensuous lyricism that effortlessly updates Cuba's musical lineage. Roberto has just been nominated for a Grammy for best Latin Jazz recording for his album Yo, for which the winner will be decided in 2014.
Fonseca is paired with London’s Family Atlantica whose debut record release last year on Soundway and punchy live shows have quickly won them a following. Their sounds pairs West Africa with Latin America’s Atlantic Coast, with a London beat firmly in the middle.
The evening will be warmed up by a screening of the classic 1964 Cuban film, Nosotros, La Música. Shot in black and white, by the renowned Cuban film director, Rogelio Paris, this atmospheric gem of a film shows a panorama of the golden age of Cuban music.
The night is part of La Linea, the London Latin Music Festival. The festival was created by Como No in 2001 to showcase the Latin contribution to the wider musical world and to celebrate new artists, new collaborations and new projects. It also recognises and responds to London's growing status as one of the world's great Latin cities, home to many Latin artists and a hungry and diverse audience. La Linea takes place each year in April, in a range of venues across central London from clubs to concert halls, presenting the widest range of new Latin music.
